Why You Should Tailor Your CV for Every Job

Tailoring does not mean rewriting your career—it means presenting the most relevant truth first.

Sending the same CV to dozens of employers may feel efficient, but it often produces weak results. Each vacancy has a different priority. A tailored CV helps the recruiter quickly connect your experience with that specific need.

Start with the job description

Highlight the required skills, tools, qualifications and responsibilities. Separate essential criteria from optional ones. Then identify where your real experience provides evidence for each priority.

Adjust the headline and summary

Your opening section should name the role you can perform and the value you offer. If you are applying for a project management position, lead with delivery, budgets, stakeholders and outcomes—not every task you have ever completed.

Reorder your strongest evidence

Keep your employment history honest and chronological, but move the most relevant bullet points to the top of each role. Expand achievements connected to the vacancy and shorten unrelated details.

Use accurate keywords

If the advert asks for “customer relationship management” and you have genuine CRM experience, use that clear language. Keywords help both recruiters and applicant tracking systems recognise a match. Never claim a tool or qualification you do not have.

Tailoring can be quick

Maintain a master CV containing all your roles, achievements and projects. For each application, create a focused version from that source. Ten thoughtful minutes can make the difference between appearing generally capable and clearly suitable.

A tailored CV respects the recruiter’s time and strengthens your own case. It does not change the facts; it makes the right facts easier to find.
