A recruiter cannot guess the value behind a vague or confusing CV. Before you apply, check that your document avoids these seven common mistakes.
- Using one CV for every vacancy. Reorder and adapt your evidence so the most relevant experience appears first.
- Listing duties without results. Explain the outcome of your work using numbers, scope, speed, quality or business impact where possible.
- Writing a generic summary. Replace phrases such as “hard-working team player” with your profession, experience level and strongest relevant expertise.
- Adding irrelevant personal information. Marital status, religion, passport number and full home address are rarely necessary and create privacy risks.
- Using inconsistent dates and formatting. A clean pattern makes your career history easier to understand and signals attention to detail.
- Ignoring spelling and grammar. Read the CV aloud, use a spelling tool and ask another person to review it.
- Making contact difficult. Include a professional email address, a reachable telephone number with country code and a relevant LinkedIn link if it is up to date.
Finally, save the document with a useful filename such as FirstName-LastName-CV.pdf. The goal is simple: make it effortless for the recruiter to understand your fit and contact you.
