How Long Should a CV Be?

The best CV is not the longest one—it is the shortest document that proves you are right for the role.

There is no universal page count for every candidate, but there is a useful principle: include what strengthens your application and remove what does not. For most professionals, one or two pages are enough.

When one page works best

A one-page CV is often suitable for students, recent graduates, career starters and candidates with a short work history. It forces you to prioritise relevant internships, projects, education and transferable skills. It can also work for experienced applicants when their background is highly focused.

When two pages are justified

Two pages are appropriate when you have several relevant roles, technical expertise, leadership experience or significant achievements. The second page must add evidence, not repetition. A recruiter should find useful information there rather than old duties listed only to fill space.

What to remove

Cut generic objectives, long lists of soft skills, references available on request, outdated software and early jobs that do not support your current direction. Summarise older relevant experience and give more space to recent results.

Make every line earn its place

Use concise bullet points that explain what you changed, improved, delivered or achieved. Compare “Responsible for customer service” with “Resolved 40+ weekly customer requests while maintaining a 95% satisfaction score.” The second version provides scale and proof.

Never shrink the font or margins simply to meet an arbitrary limit. Readability matters more than squeezing everything onto one page. A focused two-page CV is stronger than a crowded one-page document.
