Adding a photo to a CV may feel like a natural way to make an application more personal. In many job markets, however, leaving it out is the safer and more professional choice. Unless an employer explicitly requests one, your CV should usually focus on your qualifications rather than your appearance.
It helps reduce unconscious bias
A photograph can reveal or suggest age, gender, ethnicity, religion and other personal characteristics that are unrelated to your ability to do the job. Even fair-minded recruiters can be influenced by unconscious bias. Removing the photo keeps attention on the evidence that matters: your skills, achievements, experience and education.
It respects common hiring practices
In countries such as the United Kingdom, United States and Canada, photos are generally discouraged for most roles. Some employers remove photographs from applications to support fair hiring or to reduce discrimination risk. A photo can therefore make an otherwise strong CV look unfamiliar or poorly adapted to the local market.
It gives valuable space back to your content
Recruiters often scan a CV in seconds. The top section should immediately communicate your target role, strongest capabilities and contact details. A large portrait uses space that could instead contain a concise professional summary, measurable results or relevant keywords.
It is not useful to applicant tracking systems
Applicant tracking systems read text, headings and keywords. A photograph adds no searchable evidence and can complicate the layout when a document is parsed. A clean, single-column structure is usually more reliable.
When can a photo be appropriate?
Expectations vary by country and profession. A photo may be normal in parts of continental Europe, the Middle East or Asia, and may be relevant in acting, modelling or certain public-facing roles. Always research the conventions of the country and industry where you are applying.
The practical rule: do not add a photo by default. Include one only when it is requested or clearly expected in your target market. Your CV should first prove what you can contribute.
